Keeping original glass-front 1930s cabinets eliminated the need for new upper cabinets. The painted island is made of low-cost pine and topped with butcher block; the island houses a new slide-in range and microwave. Salvaged antique roof tiles give the backsplash a high-end look with a friendly price tag.
