You can get high style and high quality without a high price tag. Follow these tips from kitchen designer Jodi Caden.
Featured kitchen: White-painted Shaker-style cabinets maintain a light, classic feel. The units have a wider rail for more of a contemporary look and metal drawer interiors for easier cleaning.
Make it work at home: You can end up investing a large chunk of change in this part of your kitchen if you’re not careful. If your cabinets work well and meet your storage needs, Caden suggests that you don’t completely replace them. Instead, simply replace the doors or hinges. If you decide to replace the doors, choose solid panel doors. Caden also suggests a thermofoil cabinet finish instead of lacquered because it wears like a laminate and will likely save you 30 percent more than a lacquered finish. Caden also recommends installing more cabinets with shelves than drawers to lower costs and staying with foregoing glass inserts.
