Plan an Outdoor Kitchen

If cooking out means more to you than just throwing some burgers on the grill, you might want to consider creating an outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens are not as fully equipped as the indoor kind, but they facilitate many of the same tasks and incorporate many of the same features. Here are some guidelines for creating a space that’s right for you.

Start by focusing on the individual tasks you’ll perform in the space. Imagine what the kitchen will do, rather than what it will have. There are basic functional categories that you’ll want to consider from mainstream kitchen design: storage, food preparation, cooking, dining, and cleanup.

Storage
Cold storage of beverages is a common feature; a compact undercounter refrigerator can often handle the task. Dry storage should be created for utensils, cleaning supplies, paper goods, and other items that won’t spoil or attract animals.

Food Prep
You need a work surface that’s easy to keep clean and that can stand up to the elements. The premium choices are granite and engineered quartz. Marble, slate, and concrete are cheaper but not as durable and require more maintenance. Vitreous ceramic tile is popular, but the grout lines require cleaning. Some surfaces common in indoor kitchens, such as plastic laminate or solid-surface countertops, should not be used unless they are protected from rain and direct sun. Aside from a work surface, a prep sink is invaluable.
