Maximizing Bath
Storage Space

Around the Bathing Area
Look for tub and shower surrounds with built-in niches for storage of bath items. For more space, buy a rustproof plastic shower caddie. Some versions hang from the showerhead; others attach to shower walls with suction cups.

Use wall space at the ends of the bathtub to mount towel bars. Install shallow shelves above the towel bars or on the back wall above the tub. If you have a shower or a tub-shower combination, select doors with towel bars on the outside—an ideal spot for hanging wet towels to dry.

Around the Toilet
The space above a toilet is perfect for a wall-mounted cupboard. You can also buy a freestanding shelf unit that straddles the toilet tank. A low-profile toilet, one with a tank that rises only slightly above seat level, frees more wall area for storage. This may be especially attractive when the wall behind the toilet has a window.

Other Tips
Use wall space wisely. Hang towel bars above one another. Cap a row of robe hooks or pegs with a shelf; hang towels on the hooks and stack washcloths on the shelf.

Add shelves wherever practical. Corner shelves take advantage of frequently wasted space.

Revamp an existing closet by converting the bottom half into a chest of drawers or a built-in laundry hamper.
