Ranges, Cooktops, and Ovens
Stainless steel, oversize knobs, and other commercial influences now permeate most categories and price levels of ranges, cooktops, and ovens. But you may prefer a retro model or European looks such as mirror glass, rich color, or minimalism. The standard 30-inch-wide range or oven is now joined by sizes from 24 to 60 inches—the better to fit your kitchen layout.
Ecologically and financially, it pays to invest in energy-efficient appliances. When you prepare a meal faster, you use less gas or electricity, and food that is steamed or “speedcooked” can actually taste better and be better for you.
For two people, a convection microwave oven and a two-burner cooktop may suffice. On the other hand, double ovens and six-burner ranges are a boon to big families and frequent entertainers. Today’s appliance options let you customize your kitchen to work for you.
When shopping for a cooking appliance, consider these points:
• A professional-grade range (48 inches or wider) may need special planning to install. Check the weight and ask a contractor if your floor needs reinforcing. Plan for ventilation designed for a professional-grade range, and leave installation to a professional.
• If your budget allows, a double oven will help you bake in quantity. It’s wise to consider at least one cavity with convection mode. Keep in mind, though, you’ll lose the flexibility of placing individual ovens below counter height.
• When you compare gas cooktops, look for continuous burner grates. They create a uniform and stable cooking platform that lets you slide pans across the surface without fear they’ll tip or wobble.
• The more you have, the more you want. And in the world of stovetops this is the latest trend—more burners. But before you buy, even though the burner count may be higher, make sure there is adequate space between each burner for simultaneous cooking.
