Showerhead Buying Tips

Tips for choosing a showerhead that's right for you.
3 Tips for Choosing the Right Showerhead

Today's showers have the power to rev up your energy level on a groggy morning and soothe you at the end of a stress-filled day. The most elaborate systems let you tailor your shower to your personal preferences using a combination of components -- adjustable, handheld, and pan-style showerheads, as well as body sprays. But even a simple, stylish showerhead can rejuvenate and relax on multiple levels.

If you're planning a new shower, consider these points:

  • Although some shower systems are designed for easy retrofit installations, others (particularly ceiling-mount showerheads) require major plumbing changes. Consult a plumber or bath designer regarding costs before you commit to a fancy setup.
  • To save energy, water pressure is regulated by the U.S. government to be no more than 80 pounds per square inch (psi), but it isn't required to be that high. Your water pressure may be lower. Keep in mind that most low-flow showerheads are designed for homes with water pressure of 80 psi.
  • Because it's hard to know whether you'll like a showerhead before it's installed, take note of various sprays when you're on vacation or an overnight guest, and ask about brands.
