Make an Island

Materials to Buy

  • One 30x40-inch cabinet base
  • Narrow stack of wine-storage cubbies (or build using ¾-inch plywood)
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire mesh
  • Plywood (to make countertop ledge)
  • Glass blocks
  • Brackets
  • Tile
  • Tile edging or molding
  • Grout
  • Paint brushes or rollers
  • Stain-blocking primer
  • Satin-finish acrylic latex paint

Tools to Gather

  • Screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Hammer
  • Nail set

Step 1: Build or buy a narrow stack of wine-storage cubbies and attach them to one end of the cabinet.

Step 2: Remove the panels in the doors. Replace with wire mesh, hiding cut edges on the inside with strips of molding.

Step 3: Make the countertop and ledge from ¾-inch plywood.

Step 4: Top with tile; edge with tile or wood molding.

Step 5: Set the ledge on grouted glass blocks, securing it with brackets or corbels at the back for more strength.

Step 6: Try a textured or specialty paint treatment. This may be the place to bring an accent color into your kitchen.

Step 7: Install hardware pulls on drawer and doors.
