Step 1: Enlarge the island by adding shelves made from plywood or 1x12 lumber between the base cabinets, spacing them to hold cookie sheets, rolling pins, or other specialty items.
Step 2: Replace half shelves inside the cabinets with full-depth shelves for more storage.
Step 3: Face the sides and back of the island with beaded-board panels or planks cut to size.
Step 4: Face the kickplate with a length of wood or ¼-inch-thick plywood.
Step 5: Remove one door for easy access to bowls and pans.
Step 6: Add bun feet to the kickplate, cutting them in half if necessary.
Step 7: Paint the island to harmonize with your existing kitchen.
Step 8: Top the island with a solid-surfacing countertop (or marble if you want to spend the extra dollars).
Step 9: Install hardware pulls on drawer and doors.
