Fleur-de-lis Flair: Steps

Step 1: Clean and lightly sand door.

Step 2: Apply a stain-blocking primer, a coat of taupe latex paint, then two coats of black latex paint, allowing it to dry after each coat.

Step 3: Lightly sand edges to expose taupe paint and wood.

Step 4: Enlarge fleur-de-lis pattern to desired size (Photo K). Using a scroll saw, cut the pattern pieces from a 1/8-inch-thick board.

Step 5: Lightly sand edges of the pieces, apply a coat of taupe paint and allow to dry.

Step 6: Brush on a mixture of 1 part black latex paint to 1 part water. Let stand 10 seconds, then wipe with a clean towel to mute the color. Allow to air dry.

Step 7: Apply pieces to the door using wood glue.
