Spiff Up Cabinets

Traditional Trim
Wood molding blocks and fluted wood trim pieces help transform this door.

Materials to Buy

  • Wood molding blocks
  • Finishing nails
  • Trim pieces
  • Paintbrush
  • Stain-blocking primer
  • Taupe latex paint
  • Black latex paint
  • Square raised-panel cabinet door

Tools to Gather

  • Fine sandpaper
  • Damp cloth
  • Wood glue
  • Saw
  • Clean towel
  • Router

Step 1: Clean and lightly sand door.

Step 2: Position wood molding blocks as desired on the door and adhere using wood glue. Secure them from the back of the door with small nails.

Step 3: Using a saw, cut the trim pieces to fit between the blocks and similarly secure with glue and nails.

Step 4: Apply a stain-blocking primer and two or three coats of taupe latex paint, allowing it to dry after each coat.

Step 5: Use a small brush to apply a mixture of 1 part black latex paint to 1 part water in the molding and trim piece grooves. Let stand 10 seconds; wipe with a clean towel. Allow to air dry.

Step 6: Route a small groove on the bottom inside edge of the door for fingertip pull space.
